Where it started?

When we set out to start RedBarTaiwan, we had three goals: first, to create a community that showcase Taiwan watch collectors; second, to donate to charities in Taiwan; and third, to participate in the RedBar Global meetup as Taiwan based watch collectors. At the end of the day, our mission at RedBarTaiwan is to showcase Taiwan watch collectors to the world, a concept we call #錶友外交 !

The Journey

I believe it was 4 years ago when we began searching for a watch brand to collaborate with. From the outset, we had a strong affinity for the NOMOS brand — a brand that offers affordable, entry-level watches ideal for newcomers. NOMOS is also endorsed by the independent watch pioneer Phillip Dufour, which further cemented our interest. Our initial focus was on their World Timers.

We initially reached out to the NOMOS global team via email. However, the pressure and stress of purchasing all the watches upfront to then sell them to our members did not align with our vision. It made us feel more like watch dealers rather than enthusiasts, especially since we all have full-time jobs. This concern lingered until we met Bruce and Sam from DXM Watch.

The Initiation

We hit it off with DXM very well; they provided us with a couple of Watchlab watch boxes for raffle games during our watch get-togethers, and they are willing to collaborate with us on this initiative. Our role is simply to share the information, but we aim to avoid making it a constant hard sell to our members. Therefore, during our gatherings, we’ve only briefly mentioned this project to the group, and those interested can sign up accordingly.

The Design

Since it’s a group watch, those who might not be able to purchase it can still participate. Initially, we considered a pink dial, but NOMOS rejected the idea because they reserve this color for breast cancer awareness.

We then created a poll for everyone to vote! (Come to think about it, we should require registration first so we will know who voted, in case of double voting.) We had a total of 26 votes: 17 voted for this design, and 9 voted for the British Racing Green.

Finally, we came to the conclusion that we want the matte green dial with gold hands. Personally, I feel it has a more timeless design and isn’t too flashy. We chose the green color not only because it’s a DXM dealer watch color, but also because of their previous collaboration with NOMOS clubs. Additionally, Taiwan is known for its mountains, covering 2/3 of the country, which are abundant in greenery.

We’re genuinely excited to have secured the green dial from the NOMOS Zurich World Time reference. As we know, the three most popular colors from any watch reference are blue, green, and salmon. Singapore already has the salmon, and NOMOS’s regular production offers blue. Now, we’ve got the GREEN, thanks to DXM for their efforts!

The Charity

Part of this group watch initiative is ensuring we donate to a local charity in Taiwan, and we allowed the 8 RedBarTaiwan owners to choose the charity. One of the chosen charities, Kanner.org.tw 財團法人台灣肯納自閉症基金會, holds a special place in the members’ hearts, as one member and their family were deeply impressed by their work during visits to their branches in Longtan, Taoyuan.

Special thanks to the contributing members RedBarTaiwan, DXM, Gerald, and David, who all donated $16,000. Additionally, Jason contributed $1,000 to round out the total. In total, we donated $65,000 NTD, which is approximately USD $2,000 to the charity.
